What was once a role focused on getting students out the classroom and into careers, school counselors are now responsible for so much more. They must focus on the mental health, behavioral health, emotional wellbeing and psychosocial development of the students they serve. So how can school counselors help mitigate the mental health crisis occurring among our nation’s children?
Learn4Life, which provides personalized learning, a flexible schedule and job training for its students, has created extra layers of support for students in need. Its average student to counselor ratio is 1:250. Counselors are supported by resources to provide wraparound services and all staff are trained in trauma-resilient practices. Unique to Learn4Life, its counselors act as part of a school team of student support professionals that include school psychologists, social workers and mentors.
